Many politicians have been in the news for faking degrees even in a country where educational qualification has nothing to do with becoming a parliamentarian. If they really feel that one should be judged for the work they have done and not the education they have received then why fake it. Politicians reflect our country and them doing such bits really puts a question mark on our country’s progress. Here’s a look at few politicians who have been in the news for their fake degrees.
1. Jitendra Tomar
He hails from the anti-corruption party: AAP, and was recently arrested for forging his degree certificates (isn’t it ironic?). He has been accused of cheating, forgery, forgery with purpose of cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of IPC.
2. Rahul Gandhi
The congressman Rahul Gandhi too was in the news for faking his degrees. As per the report by the New Indian Express Rahul Gandhi faked the dates and the name of the course that he studied on the affidavit and had also flunked in one of the exams (whoa!). But later the University clarified that Rahul was a student of Trinity College and was awarded an M Phil in Development Studies in 1995.
3. Smriti Irani
Smriti Irani the HRD minister was in news for her qualification. A woman’s right activist MadhuKishwar said that Smriti Irani is just 12th pass. Also she is reported to have given contradictory declarations in her affidavits of 2004 (a Bachelor’s of Arts degree) and 2014 (Bachelor’s of Commerce degree) (only if she remembered what she wrote before).
4. Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal has also been accused of a fake doctorate degree from East Georgia University (the university which doesn’t even exist).
5. Surender Singh
A representative of Delhi Cantonment constituency, Surender Singh was also accused of forging his educational qualification. The AAP member presented himself to be a 2012 batch graduate from Sikkim University infront of the Election Commission. Whereas RTI has revealed that Sikkim University has rejected any such record and stated that there was no such student. Or probably he studied there as Mr. India!
6. Babanrao Lonikar
Maharashtra Water Supplies minister Babanrao Lonikar . The BJP minister Babanrao Lonikar is also making news these days for faking his qualification. In the affidavit submitted to Election Commission in 2004 and 2009 he stated that he has cleared the first year of Bachelors of Arts (FYBA) from Yashwantrao Chavan Open University (YCOU) in 1991 but in his 2014 affidavit he stated that he has studied till class 5 only. His personal website states that he has a Bachelor of Arts degree.
7. Ram Shankar Katharia
Minister of state for HRD, Mr. Ram Shankar Katharia too was in the news for forging marksheets. Bad!
